Expectations
Before the experience, what did you think would happen?
I thought it would be a lot of fun to do different S.T.E.A.M activities with the elementary schoolers during the after school hours. I figured a lot of kids would be interested and would want to participate in something new. I came up with multiple ideas that I thought the kids would enjoy.
What did you expect to gain from an educational stand-point?I felt that I would gain knowledge on how to work with kids and get them to want to be involved in something. I figured I would learn which activities the kids absolutely loved and which ones they thought were okay. Since I want to major in early childhood education it was nice to work with the elementary schoolers one on one and see there thinking process as we did different activities.
What new knowledge did you hope to gain from this experience?
I really wanted to learn about how to interact with elementary schoolers. I didn’t make any kids do the activities if they did not want to. It was all optional but so many kids wanted to participate and really enjoyed doing these things. I wanted to gain knowledge on what types of things kids really liked and which things they just thought were okay.
What new relationships did you gain from this experience?
I was able to meet and work with all the children in School Aged Child Care at Brown Elementary (SACC). I knew the kids before going through this experience but I felt I got to know them even better now since I have spent a lot of time talking to them one on one while they worked on whatever activity we were doing for that week. With there being so many kids at SACC it can be hard to really get to know them all but getting to work with them in small groups really did help.
How did you think you would benefit from your involvement?
I thought I would benefit from this because I was able to figure out what things I could maybe one day do in my own classroom if I do end up becoming an elementary school teacher. School isn’t always about book work especially with children. It is important to do things with them they like and are hands on when they’re little. I learned how to not only make the things we did but how to incorporate it for an educational purpose.
